Torsion Bar

Basics of a Torsion Bar

The technical definition of torsion bar, is, that it is a metal bar or a flexible spring that renders a spring action to a machine or a vehicle. In case of a vehicle, it’s rigidly fixed to the frame or chassis of a vehicle at one end. And at the other end it is fixed to the spindle, axle or to the torsion bar suspension arm. When the vehicle moves in the forward direction, it generates some natural forces. Such forces create huge amount of torque on the torsion bar ultimately making it twist along its axis. The fixture of the torsion bar individually depends on the specifications of a vehicle design. These bars are used in vehicles where the suspension is of limited space. The basic idea of a vehicle bearing a torsion bar is, it renders support to the weight of a vehicle. It engulfs the resilient forces that is produced by the vehicle during the motility and the motion. And lastly, keeps a good contact of the tires with the road’s surface.

In case of these bars being conventionally used in production machines and devices, the idea it provides remains the same. Let’s revise it once again. The bar is positioned to the chassis with a bracket which extends from the front suspension to the rear point of the vehicle. It endures a vehicle’s twists and loads about its center just to provide springing action to it. I hope the basic action and definition of torsion bar is clear till here.
The design of a torsion bar is based on the quantity of torque that is used in the angle of twist, the extent of the spring twist and also on the overall dimensions and materials used to build this metal bar. This kind of a suspension system in anĀ automobile, helps avoid hazardous bumps, jerks and bouncy effects whilst driving.

According to the definition of torsion bar being a spring, it literally isn’t. It just provides an effect like one. Thus if it comes to the question of replacing a torsion bar; very simple. Merely by fidgeting with the tensioning bolts and usingĀ not-so ultra sophisticated removal tools, you would be able to remove a faulty torsion bar form a vehicle. Just follow these few technical steps and you are on your way to replace the old with the new.

Torsion Bar Removal Process

Required Tools

  • A Variable Socket
  • A Jack
  • A Tensioner
  • A Wrench

Instructions

Step 1: This is the first step towards the working of the torsion bar removal. So, raise the hood of the vehicle with the help of a jack. This will help you get an in-depth view of the entire suspension system.

Step 2: After you are comfortably positioned, gently remove the torsion bar’s bolts which are on the cover plate. Do this with the help of a wrench.

Step 3: Notice that, the plate cover is quite loosened up. Now you can easily detach the bar out with your bare hands.

Step 4: But before you lighten the tension from the torsion bar, the adjustment level of the adjusting bolts is supposed to be measured. Note this measurement down it’ll help you in the installation of the new bar.

Step 5: Once you do this, ease the torsion bar and place the tools with the adapters over it.

Step 6: Firmly tighten the tools up so that the adjustment bolts of the torsion bar is raised a bit higher. This is done by the action of torsion bar adjusters.

Step 7: This is the final step of the torsion bar removal. Unscrew the torsion bar’s adjustment bolts and loosen it up gently. Check if the bar is easy to remove now.
